I’ve hopped on too. How embarrassing. Poor Pete Evans copped a lot of flack in 2012 for activating his almonds, but now it seems to be the latest food trend, one that until recently I thought was a load of nonsense. It’s that word! Activated. It makes them sound like little ticking almond bombs. Maybe if we used a different one? Awakened? No, now they sound like born-again almonds. For the purposes of this post, let’s use invigorated! Very enthusiastic. Continue reading

Hello there! And goodbye... This is my last post to this account. It’s been a fun ride for the last 4+ years. Thanks to you all for your support and foodie creations!
Sadly, Instagram ain’t what it used to be. The “algorithm” is partly to blame, along with the way users have responded to it to increase their visibility. Insta-parties, pods, pressure to post everyday, maintain a certain aesthetic and engage with everyone; and grappling with how to do it ‘authentically’. It amped up the competitiveness, in place of valuing community building.
I get it, and no judgement here - social media has imposed these rules on users, and if you want to stay in the game, for various, perfectly legitimate reasons, you have to play.
I took an unexpected break for a few days and it lasted two months, and I can’t deny how freeing it has been, in lots of ways. These last six months have been a rollercoaster and I’m honing in on what’s important to me.
I’ve been so lucky to make some wonderful friends through here though (you know who you are, girls!). I haven’t decided what to do with the blog, I’m not quite ready to let it go. It’s all the (unfortunately required) social media around it that I need to let go of. It’s a puzzle I haven’t worked out yet. 🤔
.
I’ve set up a personal, closed Insta account, @erinjbarry. If you’d like to stay connected, feel free to shoot through a request - I’ll accept requests from people I already ‘know’ through this account. It won’t be fancy food photos, or even regular posts. Just real life randomness and probably occasional ranting (since I can’t help myself 🙈). One of the things I enjoy most is to see what books other people are reading (looking at you, @foxbasealpha)!
I’ll keep this account open, mainly because I don’t want to lose years of personal messages, but will no longer be posting.
I’m so grateful for all your support over the last four years. ❤️ See you round like a rissole! 😄 xx
Clichéd, but I still love it. 🥑#smashedavo .

How cute are these two! Apparently it was #nationalsiblingday this week (thanks Vicky), so here’s a snapshot I found recently of my little sister and I, circa 1990 I reckon. On my grandparents’ washing line on their property in the Barossa Valley (which of course I never fully appreciated when they had it! Set right in the vineyards and all 😂). Old Datsun in the back. Amazing the photos that could be captured on the old cameras that only had 24 shots per roll of film... (unlike today of course where we just keep shooting until we get that ‘perfect’ shot...). And now my little sister is a head taller than me and comes round to paint with her little nephews. ❤️
While I’m on the subject of sisters, a shout-out to my sister-in-law @melsargesargeant who has just launched @nhmnewcastlehuntermumma, a new lifestyle website for the mums of Newcastle. Any Newcastle locals might know Mel as Sarge from @newfm105.3. Congrats Mel!
Have a great Friday all xx
We hear an awful lot about PRObiotics, but not nearly as much as PREbiotics, which Dr Michael Mosley describes as “fertilizer for the gut”. According to Dr Mosley, prebiotic fibre helps the probiotic good bacteria to thrive, so I’ve been looking at ways to incorporate more into my diet. This popular guacamole dip has an extra prebiotic twist - and the direct link to the recipe is in my bio.
Although I’ve been quiet on Insta the last couple of weeks my excuse isn’t as good as @theadventuresof.zoe’s! 😂 Congrats on the arrival of baby Grace, Zoe!
I’ve just started my third week of my new job. You know when you hit the “oh crap now I’m expected to start really doing stuff and I still have no idea what’s going on” phase? That’s where I am now. 😄 But happy to report it’s all going well!
Also - just wondering - has anyone seen A Quiet Place?
