#8 My Man Quits Sugar: Week Six

This week has changed everything.

While my man was excited about getting to have sweetness again, I was a little nervous. I was worried that I would just want to gorge myself, and six weeks of no sugar would have been for nothing.

When we added the berries to our muesli on Monday morning, I was reminding my husband, “now, we have to be careful… Eat them mindfully… Reflect on how they make you feel…” He looked at me like I’d gone mad and just ate his muesli and was fine. I was pleasantly surprised to find that although I really enjoyed eating them, I didn’t feel afterwards like I needed more. It was just enough.

The very fact that we are now allowed to include a bit of fruit, rice malt syrup and stevia has made me realise that I no longer need it; compared to the last six weeks where it has been all I could think about. Of course, those six weeks were necessary to help us get to this point.

I used to have 2 heaped teaspoons of white sugar in my tea and coffee. Earlier this week I added 1/2 a teaspoon of natvia (stevia) to my coffee, which has the sweetness equivalent to 1 tsp of sugar. It was too sweet for me. I’ve gone back to drinking it without!

One weekday we were both home and didn’t have anything sorted for lunch. I was busy and left him to his own devices, and I watched him revert back to his old lost puppy-dog routine. Opening the fridge and looking hopelessly inside, standing in front of the pantry, poking around the freezer, checking the empty bread box. Then, he surprised me. He defrosted a batch of the ‘caveman breakfast mince’, from the IQS Slow-Cooker eBook, fried up a couple of eggs, and topped it all with cheese. Not a vegetable to be seen, but a great fructose-free effort, and without relying on bread! He named it his ‘Dog’s Breakfast’. Lost puppy no more! I was so proud. He even inspired me to follow up with my own version, of scrambled eggs and kale, with cheese and sauerkraut. I even used the same plate.

Week 6 in Review

1. Favourite meal?

Him: Jamie’s Italian, when I went out for dinner on Tuesday! Hehe. But having said that, I haven’t been disappointed at all this week.
Me: I was really happy with the fish and chips, which I didn’t expect. I’ll be making them again, including with chicken.

2. Least favourite meal?

Him: I don’t know really, there was nothing bad this week.
Me: Definitely the lamb shanks… Lamb shanks… I feel like I’m eating someone’s arm…

3. What are you missing?

Him: Still mostly having sauce on things. Honey on muesli – but I haven’t tried rice malt syrup on muesli yet, so I’ll give that a go.
Me: Honestly, I don’t really feel like I am missing out on anything now.

4. How are you feeling?

Him: I just feel normal. Now that we can have some fruit and sweetness I feel like things are returning to normal again.
Me: Completely fine.

5. How is the reduced alcohol intake going?

Him: I’ve had a few extra beers this week to unfurl… But I don’t think I’ve done too badly!

Week 7 meals include roasted ratatouille, jacket sweet potato with beans, chicken nuggets, mushroom and hazelnut quinoa, and slow-cooked pulled pork, which I am very excited about.
