Fiery Dragon Eggs (aka baked avocado eggs with chilli salsa)

It’s Game of Thrones season! Woohooooo. GoT is one of my favourite TV shows (probably my most favourite, to be honest); so I was pretty stoked when fellow nerd Marisa, of Miss Marzipan, started a three month Food of Thrones feature over on Instagram (see #foodofthrones2016). Although she initially invited foodie Instagrammers to make GoT themed dishes in the lead-up to the season premiere (check out her You Know Nothing Jon Snow Cone), a bunch of us got REALLY EXCITED – so Marisa decided to continue it throughout the season. 😀 Each week, she sets a theme for people to contribute to, and she will be developing an eBook at the end featuring some of the vegetarian meals. This will be downloadable after a small donation to charity. Continue reading

Recipe: “Golden” Spiced Hot Chocolate

A few days ago I felt like having a coffee, but I didn’t want an actual coffee. You know those times when a cup of watery tea won’t cut it? I wanted the sensation of drinking a warm cup of full-fat, steamed milk, but with more flavour. I was a bit bored with the plain hot cacao or hot cinnamon I usually make, and considered making a ‘golden milk’, but didn’t want something particularly turmeric-y. I didn’t really feel like going through the fuss of brewing and straining chai (although sometimes I do find this process quite relaxing).

I sound like a right fussy brat, don’t I!?

So I made this as a bit of an experiment – a hot chocolate with a little heat and spice, and enjoyed it even more than I guessed I would. The cacao mostly masks the turmeric, so it’s not too in your face, but it has more kick and complexity than a regular plain hot cacao. I feel a bit silly writing it up as a recipe, since it is SO simple and the proportions are really to taste, but thought I would as a few people have asked me lately about the ways I incorporate turmeric into my diet. Veggie-Charged Chilli Con Carne with Green Salsa

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to participate in an ‘Instagram Takeover’ of the I Quit Sugar Instagram account, with fellow Ambassador Elise – who, incidentally, has just recently launched her own blog, Crave Real Food, which is accumulating a delicious collection of low-sugar recipes. We wanted our takeover to focus on the family-friendly side of living low-sugar, real food lifestyles, so we each contributed a couple of ‘family favourite’ recipes. This veggie-charged chilli-con carne first appeared on the IQS recipe collection, but I’m also taking the opportunity to post it here.

I tend to make this in double batches, as it freezes really well and is useful for quick weeknight dinners. In the cooler months, we enjoy it over bowls of rice with cheese (not authentic at all!), and in summer we stuff it into burritos or pile it on top of nachos! We love some buttered corn cobs on the side. It would also be delicious over baked potatoes (including sweet potatoes), in quesadillas, or with fried eggs for breakfast.
