A restorative, turmeric-filled week in Byron Bay

I was incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy an entire week in Byron Bay recently, with my Mum. When we initially chatted about travelling somewhere together a few years ago, we settled on three weeks in Spain for her sixtieth birthday, which was in April. The reality of my budget caught up with me and we ‘downgraded’ to a week in Byron – which I think I enjoyed more, to be honest! Spain is still on my wish list for another time. It was the type of holiday that only she and I could have had: My kids would have been terribly bored by the slow afternoons, my husband would have been appalled by the lack of red meat, and my dad would have been horrified at the number of turmeric lattes consumed. My 2 year “Instaversary”: Recipes from some of my favourite bloggers

I’ve been absent for a while – we’ve been on a lovely family holiday to the Sunshine Coast in QLD. I’ll probably write more on that soon, as there were some excellent kid-friendly eateries I’d like to recommend! Also, I haven’t stopped my Simplicious Challenge, but decided I would combine my May and June months into a single post, due to the holiday and finishing up a uni course prior to that. That post will be coming next weekend. 🙂

In the meantime though, I’d like to share some new recipes that I’ve tried recently, from other bloggers. A little over two years ago – not very long after starting this blog – I apprehensively joined Instagram so I could participate in the online community for my first ever I Quit Sugar 8 Week Program. I had no idea how to use it and found it overwhelming at first (now I feel that way about Snapchat! Which I have still not joined…). My first photo was a pork knuckle with sauerkraut, which I nervously posted to no one. To be honest, I initially found taking and sharing photos a scarier prospect than writing here on this public blog – perhaps because it’s a different type of creativity. But over the last two years I’ve found it to be an enjoyable and supportive experience, and one that seems friendlier than Facebook in many ways.

To mark the occasion, I wanted to say a little thank-you to some of the bloggers that I’ve met along the way (some in real life), who contributed to or were part of my family’s experience to better health; by trying and sharing their recipes. Obviously, a huge influence has been the team at I Quit Sugar – but I write about them all the time, so that’s a given. 😉 Continue reading

Fiery Dragon Eggs (aka baked avocado eggs with chilli salsa)

It’s Game of Thrones season! Woohooooo. GoT is one of my favourite TV shows (probably my most favourite, to be honest); so I was pretty stoked when fellow nerd Marisa, of Miss Marzipan, started a three month Food of Thrones feature over on Instagram (see #foodofthrones2016). Although she initially invited foodie Instagrammers to make GoT themed dishes in the lead-up to the season premiere (check out her You Know Nothing Jon Snow Cone), a bunch of us got REALLY EXCITED – so Marisa decided to continue it throughout the season. 😀 Each week, she sets a theme for people to contribute to, and she will be developing an eBook at the end featuring some of the vegetarian meals. This will be downloadable after a small donation to charity. Continue reading
